Burulai Toktobubu

Burulai Toktobubu was born in a small village near Bishkek. As a child, she would draw shapes in the dirt while tending goats in the mountains—her first quiet steps into the world of art. Although her family didn’t always support her dreams, Burulai never gave up. She began reimagining traditional Kyrgyz patterns and motifs, using them to create bold, modern female figures.

When she started studying at the Kyrgyz State Academy of Arts, it was her first time living away from home. It was difficult at first, but joining a campus mural project gave her visibility and confidence. Today, her work focuses on presenting Kyrgyz women in traditional clothing through a contemporary lens. Through her art, she builds a bridge between the past and the future.

For Burulai, art is more than expression—it’s the path through which she has found her voice and independence.
